Condor Legion Ju-87s in formation over Spain

A German military diving team is working to bring up a German Junkers Ju-87, commonly referred to as the ‘Stuka,’ short for Sturzkampfflugzeug,  from the bottom of the Baltic sea.  The Stuka first saw active service in the Spanish Civil War, sent by Hitler to help Generalissimo Franco’s fascist forces in the Condor Legion.

The only two known complete Stukas are on display at the Royal Air Force Museum in London and at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. Both are later models. Bangert said from the motor, the one just found is also likely a later model “JU87D.”

Experts believe that it is in good enough condition to be able to be fully restored.
