On January 23, the Barcelona Provincial Court ordered an investigation of Italian involvement in the 1937-39 aerial bombardment of Barcelona.  According to the court:

The bombings of densely populated neighborhoods “are notable because it was a civilian target, since the battlefront was very far away” and they served as a “testing ground” for similar, subsequent crimes.

This trial marks the first judicial probe into the aerial targeting of civilians during the Spanish Civil War.
